IELTS Writing Task 2 Question Types

  1. Opinion (Agree or Disagree): These questions ask you to state your opinion on a given statement and provide reasons and examples to support your view.
    Example: Some people think that the best way to increase road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving cars or riding motorbikes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  2. Discussion (Discuss both views and give your opinion): These questions require you to discuss two opposing views and give your own opinion.
    Example: Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
  3. Advantage/Disadvantage: These questions ask you to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a particular issue or situation.
    Example: Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
  4. Problem/Solution: These questions ask you to describe a problem and propose possible solutions.
    Example: Many cities around the world are becoming increasingly congested. What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions can you suggest?
  5. Two-part Question (Direct Question): These questions present two related questions that you must answer.
    Example: Nowadays more and more people have to compete with younger people for the same jobs. What problems does this cause? What are some possible solutions?
